Government announces sale of food in Baracoa after protests.

After the protests on Thursday against the blackouts in the city of Baracoa, the provincial Government of Guantánamo indicated to increase the sale of food and supplies that allow the population to cook more quickly.

According to a post from the local telecenter Primada Visión on Facebook, the territory's leadership, headed by the First Secretary of the Party, Giennis Paján Cobas, analyzed this Friday political-administrative measures and procedures in the face of the current energy crisis in Cuba, which the day before led to strong citizen protests in that locality.

Precisely this Friday, May 17, 2024, CiberCuba's power outage report map revealed that the municipality of Baracoa, in the province of Guantánamo, experienced one of the longest average durations of power outages, with an average of 7.2 hours and a maximum of almost 15 hours without electricity. Today, a total of 1074 power outage reports have been registered throughout the country.

In that context, the residents of Baracoa staged a street protest on Thursday night after a day of blackouts that left them without electricity for more than 14 hours.

Videos shared on social media showed the people of Baracoa in the streets, expressing their outrage at the abusive lack of electrical supply and the daily shortage of food they suffer from.

"We want electricity and food!" could be heard shouted by several neighbors during the protests, which seemed to proceed peacefully, without any destruction or altercations with the police.
