The relatives of a 28-year-old Cuban man who died on May 6 while in police custody at a unit of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) in San Juan and Martínez, in the province of Pinar del Río, are demanding justice for the unfortunate event.
Identified as Luis Ángel Benítez Hernández, he had been arrested after setting fire to his house with his ex-partner inside.
According to his father, Juan Ángel Benítez Peraza, the young man "voluntarily surrendered to the police without resisting, informing them that he had ingested poison." The father then goes on to denounce the police's lack of attention.
"He was taken to the Modesto Gómez Rubio polyclinic, where he was treated with his hands in handcuffs and was not given a stomach wash, they only administered dextrose and vitamin B6," he said.
In an extensive post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the human rights organization Cubalex pointed out irregularities committed during the medical care of the young man at the polyclinic.
"At the polyclinic, they issued a certificate of injuries that did not record any apparent signs of bruises on his body," they indicate.
After being transferred to the police unit again, the young man's mother was able to document his poor conditions in the place.
The police admitted that Luis Ángel died in the unit and the clinic director confirmed that the young man arrived at the medical center already deceased," Cubalex's publication states.
They also claim that "in Forensic Medicine, the mother was asked about the bruises that Luis Ángel had on his face and body, and if she knew of any physical altercation, which confirms the abuse."
The family denounces that the police has not given them any explanations about what happened with Luis Ángel.
"The parents have not had access to any document and have only been informed that they must wait for the results of the investigation," they add.
Luis Ángel's father stated that he fears for his safety, as regime police officers have gone to his home to threaten him.
