The Provincial Inspection Directorate of Villa Clara detected serious violations in several pharmacies in the city of Santa Clara during an audit carried out after receiving several complaints from the population.

Leticia Alfonso, director of that entity, reported that in all pharmacies inspected during a surprise inspection, the reported incidents were confirmed, and fines were applied to those responsible for the incidents, associated with thefts and shortages, according to a note posted on Facebook by the Provincial Government of Villa Clara.

At the Community Pharmacy (Unit) U668 in the capital of Villa Clara, the inspectors caught the saleswoman, who also served as the manager, dispensing controlled medications to a neighbor who had arrived with medical prescriptions and cards, the official explained.

In the warehouse area, the absence of 10 blister packs of Metformin was detected.

On the other hand, at the Special Pharmacy of Health Area U664, 18 bottles of Homatropine Methylbromide were found hidden under the counter and seven containers were missing.

Also in the warehouse stock area, there were 36 Boraden jars detained, and six were missing.

The third reviewed pharmacy was U676, where 21 sunflower oil soaps had been reserved for the center's workers, along with three boxes of 12 units of Piroxicam each, 30 tablets of Amiodarone, and 40 tablets of Alprazolam.

Cubans have been suffering from a shortage of medications since 2020, which has forced them to purchase painkillers and basic medicines on the black market.

In that context, BioCubaFarma has reported more than twenty attempted robberies in its warehouses, while those affected by the shortage denounce the trafficking of the few medications available in pharmacies.
