Girl in Pinar del Río wakes up after 22 days unconscious

The 16-month-old girl woke up after a prolonged period of unconsciousness. The news leaves great relief and hope in family, friends and other Cubans who have followed his case on social networks.

Ahittana, a 16-month-old Cuban girl living in Pinar del Río, woke up after spending 22 days in a state of unconsciousness. His mother, Marielys Pérez, shared the emotional news on social networks.

"Dear daughter, it was 22 long days waiting for your eyes to open again. My tears falling into your hands while I asked God to wake you up from that deep sleep," Marielys expressed in her Facebook post.

Also in the message he commented that many Cubans are praying for the health of their little girl and hoping that she will soon overcome this difficult stage in her health. "We are not alone," said the Cuban mother.

The little girl has been battling West Syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy, which has complicated his health from a very early age. His physical condition requires expensive drugs and continuous medical care.

The response from the Cuban community, both within the island and in exile, has been overwhelming, offering support through the shipment of essential medicines such as Topiramate, which is in short supply in the country, and financial contributions through a campaign in GoFundMe.

Ahittana still requires specialized medical attention. His mother has urged the community to maintain its support.

"Today I want to thank you all for being there, paying attention minute by minute to Ahittana's health... She has shown me once again that she is very strong, she is a tireless warrior, that gives me a lot of strength to continue moving forward without stop. Infinite blessings for you, my girl, and for all of you," Marielys concluded.

This case has highlighted the deep crisis of the health system in Cuba, highlighting the lack of crucial medications and the continued challenge for many families in obtaining adequate medical care in such severe circumstances.
