In a historic milestone, Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as the first female president of Mexico, after winning the elections held this Sunday.
The continuity of the presidency in the Morena party, founded by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is confirmed with this victory.
"This is the triumph of the Mexican people, of the peaceful revolution of consciences, and the recognition of our people that the mandate to continue and advance with the Fourth Transformation of Mexico's Public Life is clear," Sheinbaum said on Instagram.
The electoral journey concluded with the opposition candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez, who represented the Coalition Strength and Heart for Mexico, acknowledging defeat in the early hours of Monday.
From Mexico City, Gálvez declared that he accepted the results out of love for the country, but emphasized the need to demand solutions to national problems.
"My recognition comes with a firm demand for results and solutions to the country's major problems, and the indispensable respect for the constitution and democratic institutions. We will take to the streets as many times as necessary to defend the Republic and democracy," Gálvez stated.
The preliminary data from the National Electoral Institute (INE) indicated that Sheinbaum obtained between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes, surpassing by a wide margin Gálvez's 26.6% to 28.6% and Jorge Álvarez Máynez's 9.9% to 10.8%.
In her first message after the publication of these results, Sheinbaum thanked for the support received and committed to working for the well-being of the country.
The Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) congratulated Sheinbaum on her victory.
"It is a day of glory because the Mexican people decided freely and democratically that Claudia Sheinbaum becomes the first female president in the 200 years of independent life of our Republic. Congratulations to all of us who have the joy of living in these stellar times of pride and transformation," said AMLO.
