Díaz-Canel congratulates Bukele on his electoral victory in El Salvador

The president of El Salvador swept his country's elections and will remain in power until June 1, 2029.

The Cuban rulerMiguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez congratulated the president of El Salvador,Nayib Bukele, for the great victory he had in his country's elections this week.

"I congratulateNayib Bukele for his recent election as president of El Salvador. We wish you success and we ratify your desire to advance bilateral relations between our countries," Díaz-Canel said in a message on the social network X.

This SundayBukele swept in the elections in El Salvador and managed to guarantee his mandate until June 1, 2029. The president strongly wanted this re-election to continue his plans to transform the economy and social development in the Central American country.

"According to our numbers, we have won the presidential election with more than 85% of the votes and a minimum of 58 out of 60 deputies in the Assembly. The record in the entire democratic history of the world," Bukele announced on his social networks.

His statements came before the official vote count was ready, but his words were ratified by statistics.

The 42-year-old businessman is popular in El Salvador and Latin America for the measures he has imposed against violence, gangs and crime. He is the first Salvadoran president to be re-elected since democracy was established in his country.

A video circulating on social networks showsBukele's statements about Cuba, made several years ago, when he was still mayor. It defines the island as a place of reference, in issues such as citizen security, public health and education.

Users who have interacted with that video assure that the Salvadoran president spoke from ignorance, based on the references that there are in many Latin American countries about the Cuban system. However, they consider that the current reality of the island is far from that idyllic image that Bukele once had of Cuba.
