Mother of Cuban boy injured in staircase collapse on the Malecón asks for help

Overwhelming images showed the moments following the hospitalization of the child, who has been recovering.

Gabys Vega, mother of the six-year-old child who was injured after the collapse of a staircase in a building on the Malecon on May 28, has pleaded for help.

In a recent social media post, the young woman detailed that after the minor was discharged on Thursday, May 30, she and her two children - the injured child and a baby of just 10 months - had to spend the night in the entrance of a building near the collapsed one because they cannot return to the place where they lived.

The young woman explained that they had to spend the night at the entrance of the building at Malecón 51, one of the tallest and best-preserved in that area, well-known for having balconies that resemble coffins.

I have called the government several times and have not been helped. I am on the street with my two children, the one from the accident and a ten-month-old baby, as I have nowhere to go. I hope for help from any human being who, more than a position, has feelings," wrote the young mother on Facebook.

This is how my child was left after the Malecón collapse, but I thank God that He left him alive and thanks to all those people who were concerned about him," she wrote in another post on June 2nd.

In the videos, the child is seen after his arrival at the hospital -presumably at Juan Manuel Márquez- lying alone on a stretcher, without being directly attended to by any emergency healthcare personnel.

In the images, it can be seen that the child had a very swollen mouth and a bloody back, as well as complaining of pain in one foot.

"Here nothing at all. Here there is nothing at all," is heard saying the person who recorded the videos.

This is where my son had the accident, but I have nowhere to go. I have a 10-month-old baby, I need help. My name is Gabys Vega. Thank you and please share. This can be read alongside the same videos, which have been circulating in recent days in the Facebook group "Missing within Cuba, we are your voice," in an effort to spread the plea of this mother.

Dozens of internet users have reacted outraged and moved by the shocking images.

I don't see a doctor anywhere. How disrespectful towards God!"; "Exactly, how disrespectful. The doctors should have been up there attending to the child. What a pain, my God, poor little angel!", were some of the reactions.

Several internet users tagged Limay Blanco, Lara Crofs, and other individuals or activists who could organize some type of direct assistance for this young mother.

In a photo posted earlier this week, Gabys Vegas shared a picture of the little boy "Yordanis," the name of the child, who fortunately looks more recovered.

In the comments section, the young woman pointed out that for the time being she and her children are staying at a friend's house and reiterated that they cannot return to the building because it is collapsing.

The property where the incident occurred is located on Malecón between Cárcel and Genios.

In the images that were released after the accident, it was seen that the firefighters placed a ladder on the façade of the building to rescue the neighbors who were trapped on the upper floor.

A video published by reporters from ADN Cuba last week showed the level of interior destruction of the building, which appears to have become, now yes, completely uninhabitable.

Official media outlets never commented on the collapse, just one more in a Havana that is falling apart.
