The President of the United States, Joe Biden, plans to sign an executive order on Tuesday that will allow him to close the border with Mexico to prevent irregular migration.

AP reported that the White House summoned legislators to detail President Biden's decision. They will issue the decree that will suspend the reception of asylum applications at the southern border of the United States when 2,500 daily encounters with irregular migrants are reached outside of official entry ports.

The daily encounters of irregular migrants are much higher, so it is estimated that Biden could sign the order immediately, and if so, the border will reopen when that number is reduced to 1,500 cases per day.

The Biden Administration plans to maintain commercial exchanges across the border.

Biden's executive order would imply for the White House the adoption of policies that were part of the bipartisan border agreement in the Senate. Among them is the request to limit asylum applications once a certain number of encounters is reached.

The intention of the Biden Administration is to encourage migrants to request asylum at entry ports through the CBP One app of the Customs and Border Protection Office, which schedules close to 1,450 appointments daily.

The Immigration and Nationality Act grants the president the authority to block the entry of certain immigrants into the country if they are considered "detrimental" to national interests.

The last time the daily average of detection of irregular migrants was below 1,500 cases was in July 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayors from border communities have been invited to the event at the White House this Tuesday.

At the beginning of May, the United States government announced new initiatives aimed at addressing the challenge of illegal migration from Central America and the Caribbean.

During the third ministerial meeting of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection held in Guatemala, the White House issued a statement recalling how Biden promoted several emigration programs and ensured that they will be expanded.

Among them are the resettlement of refugees and humanitarian parole for Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV).
