A Cuban residing in Brazil set fire to his house with six members of his family inside, resulting in the death of one of his children, a baby girl just three months old, and the maternal grandmother of the child, who was also the mother-in-law of the killer.
The tragedy occurred early last Saturday in a 100-square-meter house located in the Vila Rica neighborhood, in the city of Criciúma, in the southern state of Santa Catarina.
In the residence lived seven family members, all of Cuban origin: the perpetrator of the crime (32 years old), his wife (31), his mother-in-law (51), his mother-in-law's partner (58), and three children: a 12-year-old stepdaughter and two twin babies (a girl and a boy, just three months old), as revealed by the local press.
It all began when the aggressor, identified as Michael Zanabria Díaz, threw a gasoline bottle after arguing with his wife, a woman who is hospitalized with significant burns on her body.
In addition to the two fatalities, during the violent act, the Cuban man seriously stabbed his wife's stepfather.
When the Military Firefighters arrived at the scene, around 2:30 in the morning, the fire was already in full development phase.
During the subsequent work, the agents found the charred bodies of the grandmother and the baby granddaughter, who were sleeping in the same room at the time of the fire.
According to a version of the events published by a Brazilian press outlet, the man locked his mother-in-law and the baby in the room where they perished, and he himself saved the other twin.
The 12-year-old girl and the twin boy were unharmed.
The Civil Police, Scientific Police, Legal Medical Institute, SAMU, Military Firefighters, and Guardianship Council all responded to the scene.
Although he tried to escape, the Cuban accused of double homicide and attempted femicide was transferred to the Regional Police Guard Center for the corresponding proceedings.
However, according to the Civil Police, the man was found dead in his cell on Saturday morning, possibly due to suicide.
The crime reporter, Niover Licea, pointed out that the family was originally from Cárdenas, Matanzas, and had been in Brazil for just a year and a half.
The family is shattered and is asking for help to repatriate the bodies and to be able to cover the medical expenses of the survivors.
