A fire breaks out near the Supertanker Base in Matanzas.

The fire brought to the memory of the people of Matanzas the harsh scenes experienced nearly two years ago, when an incident at the Supertanker Base claimed the lives of 17 people and left numerous injured.

A fire broke out in the brush areas near the Supertanker Base of Matanzas and the Rayonitro company.

Williams González Hernández, Civil Defense official, confirmed that the fire is now under control and that three firefighter units are participating in its extinguishing.

González Hernández pointed out that the fire department teams have managed to cut off the pathways of propagation, so that the incident does not compromise the vitality of the Fuel Derivatives Trading Company or that of Rayonitro, which is in the process of producing sulfuric acid.

So far, no material or human damages have been reported. The firefighting forces are about to complete their control tasks.

The UEB Territorial Division of Fuel Marketing in Matanzas stated that the fire originated due to the drought in the area. They assure that it has already been controlled by the firefighters and the industrial zone is operating normally.

The point of origin of the fire was behind the water tanks. According to authorities, that area is far from where the new tanks are being built.

The Civil Defense stated that the coordinated efforts of various factors prevented the situation from escalating and allowed industrial operations in the surrounding areas to continue without significant interruptions.

The flames spread to three other storage tanks that housed the fuel oil and crude oil from the refinery in Matanzas Bay. The fire was active for several days, resulting in 17 fatalities and over a hundred injured people.
