In a radical turn from her recent history, the Olympic champion and former national athletics commissioner of Cuba, Yipsi Moreno, returned to competition and showcased magnificent physical form by winning gold medals in the hammer throw and discus at the Albania Cup.
"At the meet held on May 18th at the Elbasan Arena, Moreno debuted with the Tirane team, achieving victory in the women's hammer throw with a record of 63.94 meters; the best of the series: 63.94m/x x /61.55m/x/x/", reported the page DeporCuba about the 43-year-old competitor.
The news portal added that “her double title, as she also excelled in the disc throw with a distance of 29.50 m, contributed to her team's crowning as champions among women with 139 points, surpassing Skënderbeu, which totaled 130, and Partizan, which scored 72.5.”
The news took both insiders and outsiders of the discipline by surprise, as the three-time world champion in hammer throw (Edmonton 2001, Paris 2003, and Helsinki 2005) had been away from competition for a decade, and her last roles in the sport were as the leader of athletics on the island.
A position she held for several years (2018-2022) filled with controversy; indeed, her departure left a sea of doubts due to her account and the statements made by the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER).
The entity reported on the official site JIT "the release of Yipsi Moreno from her responsibilities as national athletics commissioner" based on the "personal will" of the former athlete. At the same time, the 2008 Beijing titleholder and silver medalist from Athens 2004 stated exclusively to CiberCuba that "I found out about my replacement through television."
During the dialogue, he clarified that he had requested his release from the position, but he was asked to remain until the Central American Games, which would be held in El Salvador in 2023.
“And it turns out that I found out about my replacement on television, surprisingly, when I had previously been denied my release. You tell me,” stated the one known as “Furia de Agramonte” to journalist Julia Osendi.
A member of the State Council and a deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power before settling in Europe, Moreno received numerous criticisms and questions for allegedly developing a network of privileges to favor athletes close to her, while harassing others who ended up dropping out of athletics or emigrating, questioned at the time the newspaper 14ymedio.
In the past month of April, the legendary hammer thrower had already given signs of her presence in the Old Continent with her family, after posting several images on Facebook.
Regarding its current situation, it was also reported that the Albanian Athletics Federation hopes that it will soon be integrated into the national team, although the primary reason for its presence in the territory is sports education.
