The legendary Cuban hammer thrower Yipsi Moreno, who during her glory years was a fervent supporter of the regime, has been in Europe with her family for several months.
The former athlete herself shared on her Facebook wall two photos, one of which features her husband and son, taken in Belsh, municipality of Albania.
The 43-year-old woman from Camagüey, who in 2022 said that many athletes who emigrate later regret it because "there comes a time when the money they earn in foreign clubs is not enough", has been in Europe recently with part of her family, according to sports journalist Yasel Porto Gómez.
Yipsi, a world and Olympic medalist in hammer throw, is one of the leading figures in that discipline globally.
After leaving active sports, she was appointed in 2018 to lead the National Athletics Commission, until four years later she was relieved of her position by "personal choice", amid criticism for Cuba's poor results in international competitions and accusations of mistreatment, after a video surfaced in which she was heard verbally abusing students from the Higher School of Athletic Perfection (ESPA).
"I found out about my replacement through television", she confessed in an interview with CiberCuba days later, where she denied being "tyrannical" and "rude".
In 2023, she was also excluded from the State Council and lost her seat as a deputy in the National Assembly of People's Power, thus ending her participation in politics.
