Mexico asks the U.S. to deport migrants directly to their countries.

These statements come two days after President Joe Biden announced that he would close the border and send Cubans, Venezuelans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans back to Mexico.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) proposed on Wednesday an agreement between the countries of origin of migrants and the United States to address the increase in asylum requests and deportations from that country.

The ruler would be trying to prevent the United States from returning migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Nicaragua to Mexico, as announced by his counterpart Joe Biden on Tuesday.

"We are seeking an agreement that if the decision to deport is made, it is done directly, and we are looking to reach that agreement. They arrive in Mexico and then, we have no problem, we treat everyone very well, but why triangulate? Why not a direct agreement?" stated the president in a press conference regarding the recent agreements with the United States.

These statements come two days after Biden announced that he would close the border and deny asylum requests to those who arrive in the country illegally.

Biden said that migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Haiti would be returned to Mexico, while migrants from other countries would be repatriated on direct flights, under the agreements recently signed with AMLO.

The executive order signed on Tuesday at the White House entails several changes in the operation of the border that affect Cuban migrants and Mexico.

The measure drastically restricts asylum requests at the border and will allow U.S. authorities to deport those who do not meet strict asylum standards.

In the case of Cubans who do not arrive with a CBP One appointment, they will be immediately returned to Mexico.

In addition, it will allow the closure of the border when the figure of 2,500 daily detentions is exceeded for an average of seven days, leaving thousands of undocumented immigrants stranded on Mexican soil.

The rule will take effect when the southern border is overwhelmed and will make it easier for immigration officials to quickly deport individuals who do not have a legal basis to stay in the United States.

The border will be closed immediately when the number of encounters exceeds 2,500 per day, so this measure could take effect immediately because the daily figures currently exceed that number.

Despite these measures, Biden assured that he will not "demonize" migrants, and asked Americans for patience and trust in his management of the immigration issue as the November elections approach. "I will not separate children from their families," he promised.
