A student with symptoms of Oropouche fever dies in Santiago de Cuba.

The 22-year-old young man went to the hospital in Mayarí Arriba and the doctors sent him home, telling him he had nothing. The next day he was urgently referred to Santiago, where he went straight to therapy.

A 22-year-old young man from Santiago de Cuba who was admitted with symptoms of Oropouche fever died on Friday.

Richard Daniel Nieves Chaveco, residing in the II Frente municipality, was studying for a Bachelor's degree in Pedagogy with a specialization in Geography at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Oriente, where he was in his fourth year.

According to what friends told the independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, this week he was admitted to Ambrosio Grillo Hospital with symptoms of Oropouche fever and died three days later.

A neighbor reported that Richard arrived at her house from school feeling unwell, his mother took him to the Mayarí Arriba hospital but the doctors sent him home because they believed he had nothing wrong.

The next day, he had to be taken out again because he was feeling so unwell, and he was urgently referred to Santiago, where he went straight to therapy upon arrival. The diagnosis was bacterial pneumonia, and well, the next day he did not make it," the young woman wrote to the reporter.

The University of Oriente shared a post on Facebook expressing regret for the death of the young person and offering condolences to family members, friends, classmates, and teachers, without mentioning the cause of death.

Journalist Mayeta Labrada called on the authorities of the institution to truthfully state what caused the death of the student Nieves Chaveco.

"I demand from the Ministry of Public Health of Santiago de Cuba, from Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, secretary of the Communist Party; from Manuel Falcón Hernández, provincial governor, and from the Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology, to clearly and in adherence to the principle of never lying, disclose the real numbers of deaths that are occurring in the province following the appearance of Oropouche fever and dengue," he demanded on his Facebook.
