A strong earthquake shakes Santiago de Cuba.

It is expected that evaluations will be carried out in the next few hours to determine the magnitude of the event and its impact on the region.

A perceptible earthquake occurred this Monday in the city of Santiago de Cuba, causing alarm among the residents.

"The network of stations of the National Seismological Service has recorded an earthquake reported as perceptible at 10:54 am local time, located at the coordinates 19.95 degrees latitude north and -75.83 degrees longitude west," said Dr. C. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, Head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba.

The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) detailed that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 25.5 km and with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale. It was located 7 km south of the city of Santiago de Cuba.

So far, reports of perceptibility have been received in the city of Santiago de Cuba and in various locations in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Granma, and Holguín. As of the latest information, no material or human damages have been reported," detailed Arango.

It is the perceptible earthquake No.9 of 2024.

The Public Health official in Santiago de Cuba, Aris Arias Batalla, insisted that so far no material damages have been reported due to the earthquake.

The government urged the population to remain calm and to move to open spaces as a precautionary measure.

Provincial authorities, at the time of writing this note, have not issued an official statement regarding the earthquake. It is expected that evaluations will be conducted in the coming hours to determine the magnitude of the event and its impact on the region.

Earthquakes are not unusual events in this area of the country. Recommendations from experts in these cases include avoiding panic, following the authorities' instructions, and staying attentive to official updates.

This event adds to the series of seismic movements that have affected the region in recent years, reminding the population of the importance of always being prepared for this type of emergencies.

In April, a small earthquake was perceptible in the provinces of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba, without any material or human damages being reported. The network of stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service reported the event as "perceptible" at 12:55 a.m. local time.
