Two young Cuban volleyball players escaped from their respective delegations within a few hours.
The two athletes who escaped were the Guantanamo native Ronald Luis Limonta Massó, from the national Under-21 team; and Odaimis Naomi Leliebre Palma from Cienfuegos, on the senior women's volleyball team.
Limonta Massó escaped in Mexico and Lelibre Palma took advantage of a layover in Tampa on his way back to Cuba from Puerto Rico.
On the afternoon of June 10th, following the arrival of the U-21 team in Mexico, where the NORCECA Men's Continental Championship begins this Tuesday, athlete Ronald Luis Limonta Massó decided to take a different path from his delegation," first reported the Facebook profile of Poder Voleibol Cubano.
The aforementioned source referred to alleged differences between the player and the coaching staff, which would have influenced Limonta Massó's decision to leave.
His stay at the National School was not the best, due to situations that were not to his liking regarding the coaches and the treatment towards him. This situation is a deja vu year after year in Cuba, and with volleyball despite the contract policy, the opposite does not happen," pointed out from Cuban Volleyball Power, while wishing good luck to the young athlete in his new stage.
Play-off Magazine, for its part, pointed out that the team made a stopover in Mexico City and that, once they were called to board the second flight to Nogales, Ronald Luis Limonta - who was working as an assistant within the team - had already left.
Hours later, Odaimis Naomi Leliebre Palma, setter of the Cuban women's national volleyball team, left the Cuban delegation that was participating in the NORCECA Final Four in Puerto Rico.
Play-off Magazine stated that for the return to the island, the players were divided into two groups, one with a layover in Panama and the other in Tampa, Florida.
In the latter, Odaimis Leliebre was traveling, and he decided to stay in US territory.
Odaimis Leliebre, 22, is a native of Cienfuegos and worked as a setter for the Cuban national team, although she performed other roles in national championships.
From the team that traveled to Puerto Rico, she was the only player without a professional contract, along with the libero Ellemay Miranda.
