In a strategic move, the United States Southern Command has confirmed the arrival of the nuclear submarine USS Helena in Guantanamo Bay.

The fast-attack submarine USS Helena is located in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as part of a routine port visit while transiting through the geographic area of responsibility of the U.S. Southern Command while carrying out its mission of global maritime security and national defense," the statement in X indicates.

They added that "the location and transit of the ship were previously planned."

The presence of the USS Helena in the Guantanamo Bay is reported the day after the arrival of the Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kazan in Cuba.

The USS Helena is known for its advanced capabilities and cutting-edge technology, making it a crucial asset in the maritime defense of the United States.

Its deployment in Guantánamo reaffirms the strategic importance of this base in the context of the military and security operations of the United States in the region.

This Wednesday, the United States government deployed several warships and an underwater reconnaissance aircraft to track the course of the Russian flotilla heading to Cuba.

The U.S. deployment included two destroyers, the USS Truxtun and the USS Donald Cook; the Coast Guard Cutter Stone; and a Boeing P-8 maritime patrol aircraft.

The fleet of the Russian Navy arrived in Havana on that same day. The Cuban government stated that it is a scheduled visit, but it has still generated great anticipation due to its geopolitical significance.

Among the Russian vessels are the fleet’s Pashin oil tanker, the salvage tug Nikolai Chiker (SB-131); the frigate "Admiral Gorshkov," and the nuclear submarine K-561 Kazan.
