A multidisciplinary team from the "José Luis Miranda" Provincial University Pediatric Hospital in Santa Clara successfully performed the first surgery for a renal tumor with vena cava infiltration in a pediatric patient from that institution.

The young Carol Alicha Águila, a native of the municipality of Ranchuelo, entered the emergency department of the Children's Hospital on June 4th with an initial diagnosis of kidney colic, as reported by the CMHW station on Facebook.

After various studies, a renal tumor that extended to the vena cava was detected, a condition that is uncommon in children and potentially life-threatening, explains the source.

Dr. Abel Armenteros, head of neonatal surgery in the central region and leader of the medical team, emphasized the urgency of the intervention, as the infiltration into the vena cava represented a critical risk to the girl's life.

The complex operation is the first of its kind to be performed at this institution, and it was carried out successfully by the team led by the second-degree specialist in Angiology at the Cardiocentro Ernesto Che Guevara, Cecilio González, details the report.

The young patient, with only four days postoperative, is showing satisfactory progress, she adds.

Many complex operations, such as transplants, have stopped being carried out in Cuba due to the crisis in the Cuban healthcare system.

This achievement is part of that context, where the expertise of doctors is often hindered by the scarcity of resources and the lack of proper equipment.

Last year, at the same hospital in Santa Clara, a mother reported that the medications her three-year-old daughter needed, who suffers from kidney cancer, were not available.
