Animal protectors in the province of Sancti Spíritus sought assistance this Friday for a shelter run by two elderly individuals that is facing a food shortage.

The ARCA Sancti Spíritus Foundation posted a message on Facebook informing that Esperanza and Guillén, who run the shelter, had gone 15 days without receiving the allocated food supply, prompting their request for assistance.

"They do not have the resources to feed more than 20 dogs," they emphasized on social media, suggesting that while the current economic crisis, the worst in recent decades, affects people, it hits helpless pets especially hard.

Although the ARCA Sancti Spíritus Foundation has not provided further information regarding the food shortage at the shelter, they did specify that last Friday they no longer had food for the dogs.

In May, the activists from the Foundation saved a dog that had been hacked at with a machete by a man and left to fend for itself.

Recently, they joined animal welfare advocates on social media to share in the joy of Yeiko's recovery, who is healing at home.

"Our prince is nearly healed; soon there will only be small scars that love will erase, and his heart will heal alongside his family that adores him so much," animal advocates noted on social media.

Another animal shelter, this time in the province of Villa Clara, recently requested assistance on social media for a dog that suffered a spinal fracture, expressing deep affection for the injured animal.

"You deserve everything beautiful in this world, my Milagros," said Daime Pérez Ramírez in the Facebook group Sociedad protectora de animales en Cuba, while asking for help with diapers, Desitin cream, wet wipes, and any contributions for the recovery of the little dog.
