The Provincial Health Department in Santiago de Cuba reported on Tuesday the confirmation of cases of Oropouche Fever in several health areas of the main municipality, as well as in Bahía Blanca, belonging to Guamá, and in Palmarito, in Mella.
As part of the active search process for febrile cases in the province, an increase in reports of nonspecific febrile syndromes in the mentioned health areas was evidenced, as indicated in the note published on Facebook.
The text emphasized that for six decades there has been knowledge of this disease, and "there have been no reports of deaths from it."
However, the note signed by the Provincial Health Directorate in Santiago de Cuba did warn that "there could be cases of certain severity depending on comorbidities or individual characteristics of each person".
In addition, it was reported that on Wednesday a press conference would be held at the General Directorate of Public Health, on "the update of the epidemiological situation in relation to Oropouche Fever, Dengue, and PAMI strategies regarding it."
The information arrives at a crucial moment, as in the province of Santiago de Cuba, reports on social media indicate a alarming increase in corpses at funeral homes, with alerts mentioning up to 29 people deceased in a single day.
Since the confirmation of the presence of the Oropouche virus in Santiago de Cuba last May, the disease has affected the population, and it is suspected to have claimed at least one victim, although authorities have not officially confirmed this information yet.
However, the province's healthcare situation is further complicated by the confirmation of the circulation of two dengue serotypes, which could lead to severe clinical conditions.
The Provincial Department of Surveillance and Anti-Vectorial Combat recently issued an alert due to the presence of two variants of the virus that causes dengue, at a time when "the territory shows a high infestation of the transmitting agent," mainly in the main municipality of Palma Soriano, Contramaestre, Mella, and San Luis, where more cases of arbovirosis are being reported.
