Cuba: More than 17 thousand patients hospitalized for dengue, several in intensive care.

The doctor said that children should be hospitalized when there is a suspicion of dengue.

At least 17,000 patients are hospitalized in Cuba, many of them in intensive care units, due to the dengue epidemic affecting the island.

The national director of Epidemiology at MINSAP, Francisco Durán, stated that dengue and Oropouch fever continue to impact the Cuban population due to the high presence of mosquitoes and no-see-ums in the Caribbean nation.

According to the latest television report released by the official, there are more than 17,000 patients hospitalized for dengue, the majority at home, and a significant group of patients hospitalized in intensive care units.

He explained that there is a presence of dengue in 14 provinces of the island, and Oropouche in 15.

Durán reiterated the need for timely clinical assessment, especially in infants.

He emphasized that all children with symptoms of dengue should be hospitalized because they can complicate very easily.

"Patients with dengue can be fine and can quickly become complicated due to lack of hydration," he emphasized.

He also said that Santiago, Guantánamo, and Camagüey present a complicated epidemiological situation due to the presence of landfills.

In this regard, he called on citizens to take care of the cleaning of the surroundings due to the lack of state mechanisms to control waste.

Last week, Durán said that dengue and Oropouche fever remained unresolved on the island: "The little room is still the same," he summarized.

In updating on the epidemiological situation on the island, the expert noted that both arboviral diseases remain active in the country, where garbage floods the streets and there are no resources to fumigate against mosquitoes.

At least 14 provinces reported the presence of dengue, an increase compared to the 13 provinces previously affected, as well as 56 municipalities and 51 health areas with active transmission, said Durán.

On the other hand, the Oropouche virus had been detected in all 15 provinces of the country, affecting 110 municipalities.
