Up to 130 fever cases daily in San Luis, municipality of Santiago de Cuba

The authorities of that municipality continue to not confirm cases of Oropouche virus, although they did say they have individuals infected with dengue.

The advance of Oropouche is consolidating in Santiago de Cuba in a negative way, due to the fact that the municipalities in the region are seeing increases in patients with symptoms of the disease, as is the case in San Luis, where authorities have detected more than 130 daily febrile cases.

This was confirmed by Dr. Dorequis Cervantes Martínez, Director of Hygiene and Epidemiology in the municipality, who described the health situation in that territory as "complicated”, during an interview on the municipal radio station Radio Majaguabo.

“A few weeks ago, the complicated increase in febrile cases began, with an average of up to 133 febrile cases daily,” the official said.

However, despite these statistics, authorities continue to refrain from classifying them as confirmed cases of the Oropouche virus, despite showing symptoms of the disease.

"If we have had suspicions about some patients who present symptoms suggestive of this disease, such as fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, weakness. Some patients have had vomiting, diarrhea," explained Cervantes Martínez.

Despite these complications, there are also cases of dengue in San Luis, a disease that presents symptoms similar to those of Oropouche.

At the moment, we have 82 dengue-reactive patients distributed in the urban areas of the municipality, namely the community polyclinic, the comprehensive center, and the Dos Caminos area,” stated the management.

Among the measures implemented, the doctor mentioned the opening of two emergency rooms to prevent congestion at the municipal hospital.

Last Tuesday, the Provincial Health Department in Santiago de Cuba confirmed the presence of cases of Oropouche Fever in several healthcare areas of the main municipality, as well as in Bahía Blanca, belonging to Guamá, and in Palmarito, in Mella.

A note published on Facebook stated that an increase in reports of nonspecific febrile syndromes was observed in the mentioned health areas.

The neighboring province of Guantánamo is also on alert due to the disease, as more than 150 febrile cases per week have been reported this month of June.

Although the health authorities of that eastern province have not confirmed the existence of cases of the disease, in a recent meeting, concern was raised about the increase in people suffering from "febrile syndrome," according to a report from the official newspaper Venceremos.

At the beginning of June, a 22-year-old young man from Santiago de Cuba died after being admitted with symptoms of Oropouche.

According to friends, the young man was admitted to Ambrosio Grillo Hospital with symptoms of Oropouche fever and died three days later.
