Dennis Francis, President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), said, after meeting with the Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, that Cuba advocates "for building a better, inclusive, and equal world."

The visitor described his meeting with the Cuban leader as an "honor" and lavished praise on a regime of which he forgot to mention has plunged a large part of the population into misery and divided families due to repression and the loss of hope for a better future.

Dennis Francis thanked Cuba for "its vision and leadership," while also stating he looks forward to "future collaboration towards our shared goals."

For his part, the Cuban ruler returned the gestures of the United Nations official by saying that he appreciated "his recognition of Cuba's performance and commitment to seeking solutions to the challenges of the Southern nations during our presidency of the G77 and China."

However, despite the compliments that the United Nations representative made to Cuba, there are data that he seems not to know or omitted to take into consideration.

The Caribbean nation has a poverty rate of 72%, a figure that places it at the top of the countries in the Latin American region, as reported on X's official DatoWorld account.

DatoWorld's Poverty Index, which takes into account a series of statistical parameters in order to measure the standard of living in nations, has the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) as its source in Cuba.

Among the aspects evaluated are the current per capita income, the average educational lag in the household, access to health services, social security, food, housing quality and spaces, degree of social cohesion, and accessibility to paved roads.

Cuba, to which poor countries in the region have had to donate food, medicine, and medical supplies in recent years, is increasingly facing more problems in meeting basic standards for its population.

Similarly, the renowned American economist Steve Hanke classified Cuba as the ninth country with the highest misery index, as a consequence of the disastrous economic policies adopted by the Havana dictatorship.

Hanke's annual misery index for 2022 placed Cuba below Ukraine, Yemen, Argentina, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.

Recently, the Center for Studies on the Rule of Law, Cuba Próxima, published a statement in which they comment on various events that have an impact on what they consider to be "the greatest systemic crisis in the history of the Cuban nation."

Francis, who concluded his visit to the island this Saturday, June 29 after arriving last Thursday, is a diplomat from Trinidad and Tobago who has served as his country's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York since 2021.

He was elected to his current position as President of the United Nations General Assembly on June 1, 2023. His term began on September 5, 2023.
