A shark approaches the shore at a beach in Camagüey.

The dusky shark (also known as "tablehead") can be dangerous to humans, as it hunts in areas commonly frequented by swimmers.

A "whale shark" was spotted near the shore of La Boca Beach in the province of Camagüey.

"Shark sighted! Once again, coinciding with the beginning of summer, the 'Cabeza de Batea' arrive at La Boca beach, Santa Lucía," Tiburón Proyecto Sub indicated on their Facebook wall.

His post shared a couple of videos showing the shark's fins protruding from the surface of the sea, just a few meters from the shore.

"The Nuevitas Bay channel once again shows its appeal to sharks and the beautiful town to the north of Camagüey, its uniqueness as a point of contact between sharks and humans, a relationship that in balance, can be very beneficial for both species," pointed out the Facebook profile mentioned.

The images were taken by residents of the area and shared by the environmental conservation organization's page, which requested protection for "the sharks of Santa Lucía."

The bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) is one of the few sharks that swims up rivers into freshwater. According to Wikipedia, it can grow up to 3.4 m long and feeds on all kinds of animals, including other sharks.

It can be dangerous for humans because it hunts in places where people often swim.

The ability of this shark to enter fresh water is thanks to a special gland they have in their kidney that allows them to retain saltwater in their bodies and expel fresh water, which would be fatal for other shark species.

Although its reputation as a man-eater is not as exaggerated as that of its relative, the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), its ability to enter rivers and shallow waters, where it hunts, makes this shark responsible for the majority of attacks on humans.

He often gets too close to divers. Attacks are very rare, but in some seas, nets have been placed to indicate how far people can swim. The International Shark Attack File (ISAF) has recorded a total of 100 confirmed attacks by the sandbar shark on humans to date.

During mating seasons, the "cabeza de batea" is one of the animals with the highest levels of testosterone, even higher than those of a male African elephant in heat, making it an extremely territorial animal.

In mid-November 2022, three sharks surprised a group of Cuban swimmers on a beach in Camagüey. Spectators joked that these could be used as food, amid Cuba's food crisis.

At the end of August 2020, a video shared on social media showed two sharks near the shore of La Boca beach. The footage captured one of the sharks approaching and grabbing the catch of the fisherman who was standing with his feet in the water, recording the episode on his phone.
