The former Cuban baseball player Vladimiro Torres died on Saturday in a traffic accident in his native province of Holguín.
The news of his death was announced on Facebook by Leonardo Alberto Paris Johnson, commissioner of baseball in the province, who sent his condolences to family and friends.
The 33-year-old former pitcher died in a nighttime accident that occurred on the circumvallation road of Holguin with the road to Mayarí, near the vocational school.
The journalist Maikel Hernández shared on Facebook photos taken at the scene, where a Diana bus with significant damage to the front and another vehicle can be seen.
Vladimiro Torres was the bus driver.
In addition to him, two other people lost their lives instantly in the accident, as revealed by internet user Irma Broek on Facebook.
The specialized journalist Yasel Porto recalled that the athlete was considered at one point one of the best prospects in Cuban pitching.
Torres pitched for the Cubs in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, and for the Wasps in 2011-12. He did not achieve any decisions in the National Series, as detailed on his Facebook.
More information about this tragic event was provided in the Facebook group "The Kings of the Sugar Mill in Cuba" by Juliver Céspedes from Holguín.
He said that the bus driven by the former baseball player crashed into a truck around 9:30 pm at the end of the beltway.
"The truck did not stop and the bus crashed into it," he pointed out.
Hundreds of people have expressed their sorrow on social media over the death of Vilito, as he was known to his closest friends.
