Several images on social media demonstrate how the poor quality of bread in Santiago de Cuba has persisted for over a year.
The independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada expressed his frustration on Facebook about the quality of bread in the eastern province.
She shared the images sent by her followers documenting how the government sells dry, burned, old bread, and of very poor quality dough in the bodegas to the population.
"I get up to have breakfast and I come across this! If this is how the first meal of the day starts, I wouldn't want to see the rest," Mayeta commented.
The followers of the communicator testify to the terrible quality of the bread and ensure that, despite complaints to the government, no solutions to the problem are forthcoming. "This is a never-ending story," said one person.
The situation of bread in Santiago de Cuba has been a recurring issue since the beginning of 2023. Problems with production are due to the use of extenders such as cassava and plantain because of the shortage of wheat flour.
The flavor, texture, and quality of the bread resulting from these government experiments has generated rejection among the inhabitants.
Additionally, inflation and other economic problems in the country have worsened the situation, forcing many Cubans to allocate a greater portion of their incomes to acquire basic products that are of low quality.
Many families on the island do not have resources to put a piece of bread on the table. This is one of the basic foods that has seen the biggest price increase in the current crisis.
The government said it is seeking solutions, but as the years go by, the quality of bread in Santiago de Cuba and the rest of the country continues to worsen.
