Cuban handball player Imara Valdés dies at the age of 38

The Cuban handball player Imara Valdés passed away on Friday morning at the age of 38, as reported on social media.

A member of the national handball team, apparently Imara lost the battle against cancer, leaving behind two young children.

She passed away in the early hours, a victim of cancer that had already spread. All very quick and unexpected," wrote a user on the social network Facebook.

Imara's family members wrote condolence messages on the social network itself.

May God have you in glory, beautiful. Only He knows why He takes away the beautiful people who are loved by their family. My cousin, the smallest one, the bravest of all, has passed away. A kiss to Aunt Eloisa, until we meet again," said Kenia Ador, Imara's cousin.

While another member of the Cuban handball team, Ayling Martínez, expressed that "today is a sad day, one of the greats of Cuban handball has just passed away, a great friend, teammate. Today I have no words to express the pain I feel, may God hold you in glory."

The president of the Institute of Sport, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER), Osvaldo Vento Montiller, from his profile on X, lamented the death, which adds to that of two other athletes recently.

Imara Valdés Agramonte was born on April 13, 1986, in the Reparto Virginia, in the city of Santa Clara. She was the only athlete in her family.

She started playing handball at the age of 11, while she was a student at the semi-boarding school "Celia Sánchez", motivated by a physical education coach who enjoyed practicing this sport.

In 2003, she was included in the national preselection of handball, at only seventeen years old.

He was part of the pre-selection and the Cuban Team, participating in two International Competitions (Pre-Olympic Tournament qualifying for the World Cup in Germany 2008, and the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro 2007) where he finished in second place among countries behind the team from Brazil.

In 2010, she retired from active sports and received the distinction from the INDER in Villa Clara accrediting her as a Glory of Cuban Sports.
