The death of Dr. Yaimarelis Pico Carela this Friday has left a deep sorrow in the medical community of Santiago de Cuba, as she passed away at only 44 years of age.
Aris Arias Batalla, Provincial Operations and Relief Manager for Aquatic Safety in Santiago de Cuba, reported on Facebook about the death of the Santiago resident, highlighting that the doctor “fought for over 15 years with her affliction, with that painful and terrible illness, being both a physician and a patient at the same time.”
In another post, Arias publicly shared a message of gratitude conveyed by the late physician "to the medical team in the hematology department of the Juan Bruno Zayas Clinical Surgical Hospital."
Regarding the team, he said, "They never gave up and for a long time they were determined to alleviate her physical ailments with treatments to prolong her life. Unfortunately, the final diagnosis was known; no one hid it from her, as she, being a doctor, was always aware of her condition and complications."
At 44 years old, Pico worked as a doctor in Brazil and Venezuela, and also served at the Camilo Torres Polyclinic in the historic center of Santiago de Cuba.
Many will also remember her as a role model for being a good daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, and mother to a teenager.
"Our condolences to his mother, Josefina Carela, family, and friends," noted Arias.
The burial is scheduled to take place this Saturday at 10:00 AM.
