Former President Barack Obama condemned the alleged attack against Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania this Saturday and called for maintaining civility and respect in American politics: "There is no place for violence," he stated.
In a statement issued after the incident where the Republican was injured in the ear, Obama emphasized the importance of rejecting political violence in a democracy.
"There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. While we still do not know exactly what happened, we should all feel relieved that former President Trump was not seriously injured and take this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I wish him a swift recovery," he stated on his X account.
The attack occurred this Saturday, when Trump was escorted off the stage at his rally in Pennsylvania after what sounded like gunfire was heard. Trump had blood on the side of his head and his ear, but his campaign team confirmed that the former president is "fine and is being checked at a local medical facility."
The Secret Service confirmed that Trump is safe and that the incident is under investigation.
President Joe Biden, who is in Delaware, was also briefed on the incident, according to a senior White House official.
Breaking news indicates that the shooter, who was on a nearby rooftop, was shot by snipers, and that one member of the public also lost their life.
