A car was left destroyed after being hit by a train on Sunday night at a level crossing in the city of Santa Clara, Villa Clara, according to preliminary reports, which state that there were no casualties in the accident.
Images published in the Facebook group "Bus & Truck Accidents for more experience and fewer victims!" show the calamitous state in which the modern Hyundai car ended up, which was hit by the Havana-Santiago train, as indicated by a user.
The author of the publication said that there were only material damages, and several people also claimed that no one was injured in the collision.
No other details about the incident have been disclosed, presumably because the car driver did not stop at the stop signal at the railway crossing, a cause that has led to other similar accidents in recent times in Cuba.
Last February, a rental car for tourism was hit by a train at the Vento railway crossing in the province of Havana, with no casualties to regret.
At the end of October 2023, two people died in two separate accidents involving the same train, Havana-Holguín, during its journey through Perico, in Matanzas, and Jatibonico, in Sancti Spíritus.
In the first accident, in the town of Matanzas, the driver of a car tried to cross the intersection while the train was approaching, but he didn't make it in time and the car was dragged by the railroad about 20 meters. As a result, the driver died, however, the passenger managed to exit the vehicle and save his life.
As it passed through Jatibonico, the same train ran over a man who threw himself onto the railroad track, apparently in a suicidal act, according to witnesses of the event.
In recent weeks, accidents of different nature and for multiple reasons have been reported in Cuba, many of them with a fatal outcome.
Last Saturday, two people lost their lives due to the collision between a motorcycle and a tourist rental car, at kilometer 144 of the National Highway, near the municipality of Jagüey Grande, in Matanzas.
Although the population perceives an increase in traffic accidents in recent months, Cuban authorities stated that in the first semester of 2024, 543 fewer incidents were recorded in the country compared to the same period last year.
In the official television program "Mesa Redonda," Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Traffic Unit of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), also reported that there were 81 fewer fatalities (23%) and a reduction of 151 injuries (5%) from January to June of this year compared to the same months in 2023.
