An elderly Cuban resident of the city of Camagüey who had been missing from his home since June 14, the day he went to cash his check, was found dead this week.

A report from the Facebook group Denouncing Crimes in Cuba revealed that the elderly person - named René and residing in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of the city of Agramonte - was hit by a vehicle and taken to the Amalia Simoni Provincial Hospital, where he apparently remained unidentified during his critical condition until he passed away.

The administrator of the mentioned group, Irma Broek, shared a screenshot showing a message from a neighbor of the victim.

Unfortunately, today the body of René, my neighbor, was found. They say he was hit and left lying there, and they had him at Amalia [...] I don't understand in what way the police work when they said he was not in the hospitals," the source mentioned wrote.

Several internet users reacted indignantly to the indifference of the hospital authorities, the police, social workers, and the rest of the institutions that did not do their job properly.

"During all these days, his wife was not notified, the only person with whom the gentleman lived, as they don't even have children! Of course, his death will be treated like thousands of others, unpunished," wrote Irma Broek.

He added that what happened reveals that the police never actually looked for the elderly man in the hospitals, as they said, and the expectation is that now they will also not look for the person responsible for the hit-and-run.

RIP to my neighbor. It is very sad that he passed away in that way and my condolences to his wife. It is a very hard blow for her," wrote Bárbara Yasneli Cabale.

“What a lack of respect! But from all sides, because the police did not do their job well, it is evident, but the hospital staff neither, because how does a person who has been run over arrive at a hospital without identification, and they don't report it to the police? Do they also do nothing to locate the relatives? What a disaster this country is where nobody cares about anything! Rest in peace the poor man,” claimed an Internet user when summarizing the evident inefficiency of all parties involved.

As previously reported, René's wife is disabled, missing an arm, and her husband was a vital helper for her.
