The Police of Isla Mujeres, in Mexico, arrested 11 Cuban rafters on Friday who were traveling in a public transport vehicle after having arrived in the country on an improvised boat.
The migrants disembarked after a dangerous maritime journey and tried to enter the territory through the Punta Sam area, but they were intercepted at one of the local police checkpoints.
Undocumented immigrants are in police custody until their legal situation is resolved. It is likely that some of these Cubans will be deported to the island.
The public service van, with economic number R1, where the Cubans were traveling, was stopped during a random inspection in Punta Sam, as part of an operation to prevent human trafficking crimes. At that moment, the agents noticed that the passengers were foreigners without immigration documents.
The driver of the van was also arrested and, along with the vehicle, is at the disposal of the State Attorney General's Office.
On the same day, another raft, with around 20 Cubans on board, was spotted by fishermen in Mexico. The Cuban rafters were heading to the United States.
