Yucimí Duarte, an animal protector in Havana, asked for help last Thursday on social media to feed the 45 animals under her care in the municipality of Regla.
"I come to you asking for help for my animals, 14 dogs, 8 cats, and 23 more cats from the colony that I take care of, as I no longer have anywhere to get food for them this month," pointed out the activist on Facebook, who mentioned that she takes care of a small shelter in Regla.
"I rarely ask for help, but this time I feel compelled to do so, as I was unable to work for a month due to dengue and my finances are in red alert," explained the protector, who urgently requested assistance, as she was almost out of food for the animals. "I only have food left for today and I don't know what else I'm going to do."
The economic crisis in Cuba, which complicates the feeding of animals under the care of activists, often compromises the care of dogs and cats.
Recently, in the province of Sancti Spíritus, help was requested for a shelter run by two elderly people, which was facing a food shortage.
The ARCA Sancti Spíritus Foundation published a message on Facebook informing that Esperanza and Guillén, in charge of the shelter, had gone 15 days without receiving the assigned food quota, which prompted their request for assistance.
In 2023, two elderly people faced a similar situation in Havana, where they maintained a shelter in their home and cared for a hundred dogs and cats without the necessary resources to feed them.
A post in the Facebook group "Super Mamis en La Habana" alerted about the situation and urged those who can to contribute to the administrators of the shelter located in the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón.
