Cubans receive honorable mentions at the International Mathematical Olympiad

Of the six-member team, five students received honorable mentions at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad.

The team representing Cuba at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad received five honorable mentions in this challenging and competitive event, which concluded this Sunday in Bath, United Kingdom.

Karla Yisel Ramírez Garcel, Ricardo Molano Domínguez, Ailema Matos Rodríguez, Ián David Lorenzo García, and Marcel Gámez Salvo were the young individuals who received honorary mentions.

Completing the Cuban team is student Damiam Fuentes Campos.

The contestants had to face two days of challenging math tests, which included a total of six questions covering areas such as algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics, all to be answered in just four and a half hours.

Cuba was one of the one hundred countries participating in the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad.

Miryorly García, mother of the young contestant Ián David Lorenzo García, highlighted the achievements of Cuban youth on Facebook: "I am very proud of this team because we know that every point in that test deserves a round of applause!!!"

Recently, the mother also said on Facebook: “I am very proud of my son, my brave and persevering warrior, my life!”

"I am very proud of this amazing team, of all these talented and hardworking young people; they deserve it! Wishing them thousands of successes!" the excited mother said.

The post, which showcased the entire Cuban team, was very well received on social media, with most comments wishing the young Cubans good luck and success.

García also shared a video showcasing the official presentation of the Cuban team, which, in addition to the students, included Ernesto Alejandro López Cadalso as the coach and leader, and Román Fresneda Quiroga as the mentor.

In 2023, Ián David Lorenzo García and Dalia Oliver Ballesteros won a silver medal at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Mathematical Olympiad held in El Salvador.

Lorenzo and Oliver accumulated 31 and 27 points, respectively, securing fifth place for Cuba with a total of 58 points, according to the results published on the contest's website.

That same year, two Cuban students won the bronze medal at the XXXVIII Ibero-American Mathematics Olympiad held in Brazil.

Karla Yisel Ramírez Garcell and Ricardo Miguel Molano Domínguez earned a bronze medal for their performance in the competition that brought together contestants from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.
