Cubans residing in Madrid protested outside the concert hall where singer Haila María Mompié performed on July 21 in the Spanish capital.
Carrying a giant blanket with photos and names of political prisoners sentenced by the regime in Havana, the protesters expressed their discontent with the presentation and the attendees at the event.
"Three miserable cats and sellouts, including the entire family of the communist Castro Embassy, were the audience for the Diva," wrote human rights activist Lázaro Mireles on X.
Despite this show of rejection, the artist sympathetic to the dictatorship on the island thanked the Sala Villanos in Madrid, the venue where the presentation took place, "for their trust and willingness to make this wonderful concert."
As a response to the protesters who gathered outside the venue and without mentioning them, Haila also expressed her gratitude “to the audience who, without hesitation, came to have an amazing time; the energy is something very contagious that cannot be hidden, and here we are enjoying it to the fullest,” she stated along with a video.
Before her performance in Madrid, Haila attended the Cuban festival "Bayamo," held in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France. There, she closed the 25th edition of the event on Saturday.
"I'm leaving with my heart full of love and very grateful for the 2 hours and 20 minutes that we enjoyed to the fullest," she wrote on her Instagram profile.
