Lester Domínguez, young person assaulted in Holguín: "I have improved a lot"

Send a message to all CiberCuba followers: "God willing, I will get through this; thank you to everyone who has cared for me."

Lester Domínguez, the young Cuban who was attacked with machetes in Holguín in March 2023, and who has been unable to walk since then, sent a message this Wednesday to all the followers of CiberCuba, assuring that he is feeling better, that his mood and health are good, and thanking everyone for their concern about his recovery.

"I am making this video to tell you that here at the Julito Díaz hospital, I am improving considerably. I can move my knees, legs, and ankles better now. I am gaining strength in my spine, shoulders, arms, and even in my hands. I have improved a lot here and I am in better health. I feel very good and I am happy. The care here is excellent. My rehabilitator is very well trained, and with occupational therapy, ozone, and respiratory exercises, I have improved a lot. I cannot complain," he stated.

Furthermore, he made clear his desire to recover. "God willing, I will get through this. Thank you very much to everyone who has been concerned about me. God bless you all," he concluded in a message sent to this newsroom.

On June 26, Lester Domínguez arrived at the national rehabilitation hospital Julio Díaz, in Fontanar, Boyeros, in Havana, after spending a year and three months unable to take a step. The family struggled to secure his admission to this center, and at one point, the young man asked his father to take him out of Cuba to receive the treatment that could restore mobility to his legs. The father even considered leaving through Nicaragua, to avoid constantly asking for help from relatives outside the Island.

The young man started rehabilitation at Julio Díaz on July 19 of this year, right when he turned 19. He did it with the hope of being able to walk in a couple of months. This birthday has been different from last year's when he celebrated coming of age surrounded by friends, but with a tracheostomy. He had a bedsore on his back that took months to heal, but it finally recovered. This year, the progress is even more remarkable.

Lester Domínguez was 17 years old when he was assaulted in March 2023 to steal a Huawei cellphone. After receiving a machete blow, he was hospitalized in intensive care; he survived, but he has not walked again. His attacker, identified as Adrián Grass Bermúdez, the ex-boyfriend of Lester's sister, was tried in May of this year. Dennis Domínguez, the victim's father, feared that since the person who was with his son on the day of the attack hanged himself, they would now blame him for everything that happened and the attacker would be set free.

At the end of the trial, in which they are asking for 20 years for Adrián Grass for the assault on Lester and another four years for the theft of four phones, the father of the attacked young man recounted that the person they saw on a bicycle with a machete, with remnants of Lester's blood, on the night of the fatal assault, was Adrián. Furthermore, they found the cell phone stolen from his son buried in the yard of his house.
