Cuban Hugo Franco did not stand out with arrows and finished this Thursday in 21st place in the ranking round of the recurve bow during the island's first appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Franco, the reigning national monarch, scored 669 points and will face the Mexican Bruno Martínez in the knockout rounds, who finished in 44th place with 653 points, according to the official event page.

"We work all the time with the issue of the wind," he told the accredited press before revealing that the technical performance was also spectacular to achieve the result he had planned with his coach.

After this presentation, the Caribbean athlete, the only one from his country in this Olympic sport, will return to the shooting range on the upcoming July 30, with the hope of placing among the best in the competition.

The round was led by the South Korean favorite Woojin Kim (686). The Asian athlete undoubtedly plans to lead the individual competition after reigning in the team contest at Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

With a delegation of 62 qualified athletes - the smallest group since Tokyo 1964 - Cuba aims to win five gold medals and finish among the top 25 nations in the final standings of Paris 2024, which will take place from July 26 to August 11.

Three years ago in the program of the capital of Japan, the island finished in fourteenth place, with a tally of seven titles, three silver medals, and five bronze medals.
