The ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel was excited to hear this Sunday the words of the Cuban Loren Berto Alfonso, representative of Azerbaijan at Paris 2024, after becoming a victim of his fellow countryman Julio César la Cruz in Olympic boxing.
After dedicating a post to La Cruz, a fighter from “Patria o Muerte,” Díaz-Canel took the opportunity to once again turn to the social network X to applaud Alfonso's remarks: “Honest, dignified, and moving statements from Loren Berto,” he wrote.
"An emigration that is respectful of the homeland that shaped it deserves recognition. Cuba also shares in its triumph, even if it is counted for sister Azerbaijan," he added when he must divide his attention between the multi-sport event and the presidential elections in Venezuela.
It happens that the winner told the accredited press that "everything I have achieved in boxing I owe to Cuba," and, of course, the regime never misses an opportunity to show pride when something is highlighted in its favor.
On his 29th birthday, the bronze medalist at Tokyo 2020 achieved one of the most significant results of his career. "This victory is also for the Cuban people," added the 92-kilogram athlete in statements published on the social network Facebook.
I arrived in Azerbaijan as a seasoned boxer. This time it was my turn to win, stated the world champion in the 86 kilogram category.
Regarding his current rival, he stated: "La Cruz has always been my idol since I started in the sport; I have always wanted to be like him."
He also described him as "the best of all time" and invited Cubans to follow his fights and support him on his way to Olympic glory, something that seems within reach after his luxurious debut.
La Cruz, for his part, bid farewell to the possibility of achieving his third title at this level after winning in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
