The Cuban Maylín del Toro was eliminated on Tuesday in her debut in judo at the Paris 2024 Olympics, after losing by ippon to the Japanese Miku Takaichi.
In tatami 2 of the Campo de Marte Arena, the Santiago fighter was unable to advance in the 63 kilograms category in a match where she showed too much passivity against the eighth-ranked competitor in the world rankings.
"We needed to attack more; she managed to grab and moved her hand to close in more, and that’s where the Japanese fighter slipped away," said her coach Yordanis Arencibia to the digital site JIT after the fight concluded.
The ippon came through immobilization. "Everyone knows that the Japanese are very good at that, and that's why I should have sought more offense earlier," added the former athlete.
In this way, the Cuban, a multi-medalist in Pan American and Central American competitions, said goodbye early to the event, a performance similar to what she experienced three years ago in Tokyo 2020, when she finished in 20th place.
However, the island still has chances for medals in Olympic judo. This Wednesday, the internationally awarded Iván Felipe Silva (90) will compete, and a day later, Andy Granda (over 100) and the star Idalys Ortiz (over 78), a four-time medalist in competitions under the five rings, including her gold in London 2012, will compete.
