The TikTok user @jessicaps85, a Cuban who has been living in Florida for 13 years, sparked a debate on the platform by sharing her opinion on the difficulty of finding a job without having connections within companies.
"If you don't have a friendship within a job, within a company, within a market, they won't hire you even if you apply 20 million times in 20 million places. They won't call you, they won't hire you even if the website says they need workers," he says in a video recorded while driving.
"I don't understand how the markets, how places say they need people and don't call you. If you don't have a connection inside, you can't get the job, even if you qualify, even if it's a job to load boxes in a warehouse, where all you need is a person who is physically available to do the work, that it's nothing intellectual and you don't need English, (but) just to perform that function," he lamented in his reflection, reiterating that without an inside connection or influence you couldn't get the job, and he asked other users to share their experiences.
"That's how it is in Phoenix, Arizona"; "That's right, they don't call you"; "That's how it is, I live in Georgia and it's the same here"; "I live in Las Vegas and it works just like you say, you're absolutely right"; "That's how it is in Tampa, it's the same"; "It's the same in Miami"; "That's how it is, I've applied to a bunch of places here in Florida and they don't call me, that's how it is, you need to have a connection"; "I live in Los Angeles and it's the same"; "That's how it is, it's not possible if you don't know someone, forget it, hello friend"; "It's 100% true"; "Friend, it's the same everywhere, I live in Las Vegas, NV and it's the same," some agreed.
Other users, however, reported different experiences: "I lived five years in NC and there you apply and they call you right away"; "Look, I lived in Texas, applied to work in schools, didn’t know anyone and got in quickly, and years later I moved to Virginia, applied, and in 5 days I already had my job"; "In Kentucky, you apply at staffing agencies and work and you don’t have to know anyone"; "I lived seven years in New Jersey and it doesn't work that way, you apply and they call you, you don’t need to have anyone in that job. I arrived three years ago to Cape Coral and it’s really hard to get a job"; "Well, I’m in Houston and that has never happened to me, I’ve also never worked in places where Cubans predominate, I imagine it’s a Cuban thing"; "In Austin, TX, you don’t need connections and there are plenty of jobs"; "Come to California, here is the real USA."
