The Miami Beach city commission voted to rename 13th Street in honor of Gloria Estefan, the iconic Cuban-American singer.

This street, located between Ocean Drive and Meridian Avenue, will be known as Gloria Estefan Way. The decision was made unanimously, following the recommendation of the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee.

In September 2023, the Women’s Commission of Miami Beach proposed to honor influential women in the history and culture of the city, highlighting Gloria Estefan for her remarkable contribution to music and her legacy in the community.

Songs like "Conga," "Mi tierra," and "Anything for You" shot Estefan to fame during the 1980s, consolidating her career as one of the top artists in the world.

Miami Today News also reported that 12th Street, between Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue, will be named Naomi Wilzig Way, in recognition of the erotic art collector and founder of the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami Beach.

Commissioner Kristen Rosen González highlighted the importance of this recognition, noting that until now only one street in Miami Beach was named after a woman, Barbara Capitman, a pioneer in the restoration of the Art Deco District.

The commission approved an amendment to the city code to allow for the joint naming of streets in honor of outstanding women.

The next steps include approval by the county commission to make this joint designation effective.
