Cuban Luis Enrique Zayas was eliminated this Wednesday from the men's high jump final of the Olympic athletics, after failing to surpass the qualification standard of 2.27 meters set by the organizers of Paris 2024.

Zayas started her flawless sequence at 2.15 and 2.20 before failing to clear the bar at 2.24 on her third attempt. The rest was all negative, and she said goodbye to the competition early.

"You can be sure that I gave my best effort," said the Antillean in statements collected by the newspaper JIT.

He also mentioned that he had "only about 10 weeks of training, the first few even without being at 100 percent. I think the most complicated thing today was finding the running rhythm, especially when the altitude started to increase."

The island's athletics will see Roxana Gómez compete in the semifinals of the 400 meters today, while Lázaro Martínez, Cristian Nápoles, and Andy Hechavarría will face the qualifying round of the triple jump.

Cuba is currently in 41st place in the Olympic medal count thanks to the gold medal won by Mijaín López, which on Tuesday allowed the Caribbean delegation to rise in the rankings.
