After the Cuban wrestler Mijaín López won his fifth Olympic gold, the Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel wrote a message on his social media, expressing that he felt "happy" about the victory.
“I don't exaggerate when I say that #MijaínIsCuba: the people with African and European roots who do not give up, who do not sell out, who believe in themselves and in their lineage. The most important thing about the Olympics, without Cuban chauvinism. It is a unique feat. How admirable! How happy I am!” the leader wrote minutes after the fight.
That same idea was expressed by the ruler to Mijaín during a video call shared by the digital portal JIT.
"You have demonstrated that you have the lineage of a gladiator, of a warrior, and also an exemplary Cuban and revolutionary," said Díaz-Canel, who during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics had the same action with the gladiator after obtaining his fourth consecutive crown.
On the eve of the fight this Tuesday, Mijaín and Díaz-Canel also held a telephone conversation in which the wrestler assured him that he would defend the title at the Paris 2024 Games.
"Thank you for your call. Rest assured that tomorrow that title will belong to Cuba," he said.
Mijaín is considered a staunch defender of Castroism. In the recent Pan American Games held in Santiago, Chile, the wrestler struck a young Cuban who was protesting against the regime of Havana in a stadium in Chile.
The incident occurred in a baseball stadium, where the young Cuban displayed a flag with the phrase "Freedom for Cuba." Despite the complaint filed by the assaulted individual, the Chilean Prosecutor's Office dismissed the case.
However, this Tuesday, López became a five-time Olympic champion in a historic final in the 130 kilograms of the Greco-Roman style, where he defeated the Cuban nationalized Chilean Yasmani Acosta, 6-0.
This was also Mijaín's last match on a wrestling mat during an official event, after announcing his retirement from active sports.
Dressed in red, in a tight maillot, Mijaín gave a grand farewell for the delight of the thousands of people present at the Champ de Mars Arena and the many more who watched him become the only athlete in history to win the same individual event five times under the shadow of the five rings.
