A Cuban mother denounced the negligence of the medical staff at a hospital in Holguín and the lack of necessary supplies to perform the treatment her son needs after suffering an injury to his foot.
According to the report published on the Facebook profile of Dennis Domínguez - the father of the young man who was attacked with a machete in Holguín last year - the doctors asked the mother for the gauze and gloves used for this type of treatment.
"I have been taking the child who lost a nail for two days and needs stitches, and they told me to bring gauze and gloves. The orthopedic doctor [did not attend to him because] says he is attending to other patients," the woman explained in her post.
The reported events occurred this Tuesday at the hospital located in the community of San Germán, which belongs to the Holguin municipality of Urbano Noris.
"This is happening in the hospital of San Germán. This is the medical power they want to portray in Cuba, [marked by] negligence and lack of care for patients," protested the mother of the little boy who lost his nail in a domestic accident.
Dennis, the father of the young Lester Domínguez, has become one of the most critical voices of the Cuban healthcare system. The ordeal experienced after the aggression suffered by his son has made him witness firsthand the collapse of medical services on the Island.
At the end of May, the young man who has been in a wheelchair for over a year asked his father to take him out of the country because there were no conditions in Cuba for his improvement.
"The child sees that everything is getting harder with the problems of blackouts in Cuba and does not have the necessary conditions for such evolution; he tells me that the best way I can help him is by leaving the country," Dennis said on his Facebook profile.
In July 2023, Dennis reported the poor conditions of the care center where his son was, noting that the respiratory illnesses ward lacked resources to properly care for the patients.
He also described the shortage of sheets and medications, something that is currently recurring throughout the country, amid a widespread crisis that affects thousands of Cubans.
On that occasion, the young man had to be readmitted because the sore that had developed during his therapy became infected, and his home did not have the resources to properly treat him.
According to the patient's father, the management told him that he could only stay in the hospital in severe cases and prescribed a treatment with Cefixime to combat the staphylococcus, which turned out to be insufficient.
