The Cuban Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboys reached the final of the C1 200-meter sprint canoeing event at the Paris Olympic Games this Saturday.
The reigning world champion dominated her semifinal with 45.31 seconds and will be looking for a medal in canoeing this Saturday.
At just 21 years old, the young woman from Guantánamo has already amassed an impressive record that places her among the best canoeists in the world.
Cirilo had directly qualified for the semifinals of the C1-200 meters canoeing event on Thursday with the second best time of the qualifying round. In that case, the reigning world champion in the specialty stopped the clock at 45.94 seconds, a time only surpassed by the American Nevin Harrison (45.70), the current queen under the five rings and winner of series 2.
"I knew I would have quality opponents in my series, but the goal was always to avoid the quarter-finals. I aimed to achieve a good time and do it as technically well as possible," he expressed in statements reported by the JIT newspaper.
"The level is very high, but I think that's normal. Everyone is preparing to participate in the Olympic Games and win a medal. There will always be some who prepare better, which doesn't necessarily mean more, and sacrifice more in their training," he added.
At this moment, Cuba ranks 27th in the Olympic medal table, with medals won in Greco-Roman wrestling and boxing.
The Cuban delegation has won six medals: two gold, one silver, and three bronze.
