Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboys became the first Cuban woman to win an Olympic medal in sprint canoeing this Saturday.

The paddler from Guantánamo won bronze in the C1 200 meters event in Paris, in a race that was decided by a photo finish between Canadian Katie Vincent (gold) and American Nevin Harrison (silver).

Cirilo -current world champion- finished third ahead of the Spanish Antía Jácome, another one of the favorites for the podium.

The Cuban clocked a time of 44.36 seconds. She managed to beat the 45.31 seconds that had placed her in the final.

In a 2023 that was already showcasing these successes, Yarisleidis Cirilo was crowned world champion in the C1 200 m and won the gold medal at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Successes that, along with the recent bronze medal at the World Cup in Szeged, Hungary, hinted at a good performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, according to the event's official website this Saturday.

Currently, Cuba ranks 27th in the Olympic medal tally, with medals earned in Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing, and now also in canoeing.

The Cuban delegation has a total of seven medals: two gold, one silver, and four bronze.
