The triple jumper of Cuban origin and naturalized Spanish Jordan Díaz will have the responsibility of carrying the flag of Spain this Sunday during the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will take place at the Stade de France.
Jordan became the Olympic champion in triple jump, achieving a historic gold for the Spanish medal tally.
On the podium of that competition, held last Friday, the Spanish nationalized athlete surpassed his compatriots Pedro Pichardo and Andy Díaz, who also compete for other nations: Portugal and Italy.
At just 23 years old, Díaz dethroned Pichardo with a jump of 17.86 meters, surpassing Pichardo's 17.84 meters, who was the reigning Olympic champion.
In an interview for Radio y Televisión Española (rtve), Jordan said that the Spanish authorities informed him at the last minute that they had changed his return flight so he could be at the closing ceremony.
"We changed your flight to the 12th and mine, but why?" and the response was: "You are the standard-bearer, and I thought, well, if it's worth it then staying," he commented.
The Olympic medalist and student of the legendary jumper Iván Pedroso confessed to being very happy to receive that other recognition. "That is súper important," he concluded.
Alongside Díaz will be María Pérez, a Spanish runner who won two medals: gold in the mixed relay race walk and silver in the individual 20 km race walk.
In the closing ceremony, Paris will hand over to Los Angeles, which will host the 2028 Olympic Games.
