The Cuban triple jumper Andy Hechavarría, who represented Cuba at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, sparked controversy on social media after putting up for sale the phone he received as a gift during the sporting event.

Through the Facebook group 'teléfonos habana', Hechavarría announced the sale of the mobile phone, a limited edition Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, for 900 dollars.

"For sale, new in its box, limited edition. Priced well (900 USD). It's the one from the Olympic Games," reads the post by the athlete from Holguín. The announcement did not go unnoticed and quickly generated multiple reactions among users, some of whom questioned his decision, while others understood his need to obtain additional income.

Hechavarría, who competed in the qualifying round of the triple jump, did not advance to the final, finishing out of the competition with a best jump of 16.70 meters, according to swincompleto.com.

Despite not winning a medal, like all the athletes who competed in Paris, he received the aforementioned foldable phone, a model launched on the market shortly before the start of the Olympic Games.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, which Hechavarría put up for sale, is not just any phone. It is a special edition with an exclusive design that includes the logos of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This model, due to its limited nature, may exceed 2,000 dollars in the market, becoming a highly coveted item.

The athlete's action adds to that of other Cuban athletes who have decided to sell valuable items received in international competitions. Cases like that of the boxer Roniel Iglesias, who auctioned his gold medal from Tokyo 2020 for $83,188, or that of fellow boxer Mario Kindelán, gold medalist at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
