The 16-year-old teenager Yenifer Vargas Gómez, who was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend in Santiago de Cuba this Tuesday, died on the night of the same Tuesday, as confirmed on social media by journalist Yosmany Mayeta, citing the testimony of the family as a source.
Vargas Gómez was first admitted to the Frank País Polyclinic and then rushed to the Dr. Antonio María Béguez César Children's Hospital, better known as "La Colonia," where she ultimately passed away.
The minor suffered several cardiopulmonary arrests while in intensive care, due to the same complications from the stab wounds she received in different parts of her body and head.
When the minor died, her family members were stationed around the hospital facility awaiting news.
The communicator specified that the causes of death were hypovolemic shock, left pulmonary tear, and penetrating-cutting wounds in the left scapular region as a result of homicide with a bladed weapon.
The mortal remains of Yenifer are being laid to rest at the Santiago funeral home, in room E on the first floor.
The young woman was in the tenth grade at the Rafael María de Mendive Pre-University Institute. A post on Facebook from the educational center urged students to attend the wake.
A relative present at the wake indicated that there are many people at the place and also police dressed in plain clothes.
The aggressor, identified as Fabio Lamar Vigaud, fled after committing the crime but was captured around 7 PM on Tuesday at the home of an aunt of his residing in the town of San Juan.
Relatives of the deceased teenager revealed to Yosmany Mayeta that Yenifer and Fabio were no longer a couple, but that on several occasions the family had gone to the police station to file complaints about threats he had made against the teenager.
"A month and a bit ago we went to Micro 9, they filed a report for the threats he had made saying he was going to kill her. There, the police did not act or do anything. Even my husband went to the police and the report that was made never appeared," said a direct relative of the young woman, who requested anonymity.
Yenifer Gómez was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend in the house where she lived with her grandmother, in the Nuevo Vista Alegre neighborhood, in Santiago de Cuba.
While the alleged perpetrator was on the run, a patrol car remained stationed outside the hospital.
Until July 29, the underreporting of feminicides verified by independent platforms this year was 31 feminicides, three attempts of feminicides, and six cases needing access to investigation.
As for official data, last year in Cuba, 110 people were tried for femicide - a term that the island's authorities refuse to use - 378 cases of sexual violence in 2023, and several women were left with injuries after attacks by their ex-partners.
