Reception for Mijaín López in Pinar del Río

To his admirers from his hometown of Herradura, Mijaín told them that he will never abandon them. "I will always be here."

Residents from various municipalities in Pinar del Río came to welcome Mijaín López upon his arrival in Cuba, after being crowned as the best Greco-Roman wrestler in history at the Paris Olympics.

Cuban authorities called on friends, neighbors, athletes, and the general population to welcome López, who the regime's propaganda has turned into one of the symbols of the so-called revolutionary sports.

The five-time Olympic champion toured the territories of Artemisa, Los Palacios, Consolación del Sur, and Pinar del Río, where Mijaín, a recognized admirer of Fidel Castro, did not miss the opportunity to praise the dictator on the anniversary of his birth.

"On such a special day, the day of our undefeated Commander in Chief, who triumphed and will continue to triumph, and victory will keep being born, and as it was said, our generations will continue to do things," he expressed in Pinar.

To his admirers from his hometown of Herradura, he expressed that he will never abandon them. "I will always be here," he emphasized.

Hours earlier, López paid tribute to the memory of the dictator at an event organized by the regime's authorities in his neighborhood, where he attended wearing a T-shirt printed with Fidel Castro's signature.

"We have to continue proving to the world that we have continuity, continue proving to the world that we need to correct, study, sacrifice ourselves, and do great things for the future, for the young people who follow us," declared the fighter, to whom the government gave a Mercedes Benz in 2020.

"There is no great athlete in life who is able to have so many chapters in history without a family. Family gives you essence, it gives you wisdom. I believe it is something historic to have achieved five gold medals and to be Cuban, representing the people of Cuba, a country so small but big at heart… I think I feel flattered by my people," he said, alongside the General Secretary of the Central Workers' Union of Cuba, Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, and the top authorities of Havana.

Mijaín, one of the most active athletes in proclaiming his allegiance to the regime, even went so far as to physically assault an activist who protested against the regime in a stadium in Chile during the recent Pan American Games.
